Graveyard & Garden Policy

THE PARISH OF ST PETER BURNLEY

CHURCHYARD RULES AND REGULATIONS

Please read carefully.

Special rules apply to a Church of England churchyard.  If you have any queries relating to these rules, please contact the Rector whose details are displayed on the church notice board and on the church website.

  1. The churchyard of this church is now closed. No further burials are permitted.
  1. Responsibility for maintaining the churchyard now lies with the Burnley Borough Council.
  1. The graves in the churchyard are owned by the church. This means that no one can place items on a grave other than wreaths and cut flowers without permission.  Artificial flowers are not permitted.
  1. The Parochial Church Council has set aside a memorial garden (“the Garden”) on the south side of the church as an area for the interment of cremated remains. The Garden is enclosed by a wall and a gate. There is still room in the Garden for the interment of cremated remains but not including any receptacle. A burial register and a plan showing the location of any burial of cremated remains is maintained in the church. The Garden is maintained by the Burnley Borough Council and the area around the Garden is maintained by volunteers.
  1. Wreaths and cut flowers can be placed in the Garden. Please remove wreaths and cut flowers from the Garden and from graves in the churchyard when they have withered – we will remove any withered wreaths and flowers which have not been removed.
  1. No fencing, kerbs, edging or other artificial enclosure of any kind is allowed in the Garden.
  1. Please note that this is a Christian churchyard. No pictures, photographs or other personal items are to be placed on the graves or in the Garden. Anything placed on the graves or in the Garden or in the churchyard generally in contravention of these rules is technically a trespass and it will be removed. It will be retained for two months to enable you to collect it. If you do not do so, it will be disposed of.
  1. Unfortunately, from time to time we have had problems with vandals in the churchyard who have stolen wreaths and flowers.  Any item placed in the Garden or on graves is placed there at your own risk and we regret that we cannot accept any liability for loss or damage.
